The sound of two sets of footsteps, one long and languid, the other shorter, intense, announced the arrival of Stratton and Markham. Badawi looked up from the plastic evidence bag a forensic officer was holding out for her to examine.

‘Good morning Sir. Sarge.’

‘You’re here early, Subin,’ said Stratton, surveying the scene, ‘and you seem to have everything in hand. Well done.’

From Markham there was no praise but nor was their criticism, merely a curt request for a summary of what was known so far. As Badawi recounted her morning’s labours, Markham listened, interrupting once or twice to clarify a detail. Stratton, too, listened but with a distant gaze, as though half of his mind was on absorbing the information, while the other half attended to a more distant thought.

‘The pathologist will be here soon,’ Badawi concluded.

‘Excellent, great work Subin,’ said Stratton. ‘I’d like you to continue coordinating things while I take a look at the body.’

Badawi noticed Markham draw in a sharp breath, her face hardening upon hearing this. It was a relief to see the Two Kings making their way through the park to their little huddle. As Stratton and Markham climbed the slope to the crime scene, Badawi briefed Min and King, deploying them to door knock the neighbouring residents, starting with those who had made the pre-dawn call to the fire service.

As she went about her work, the dark stare she had received from Markham stayed with her. The conundrum, as she saw it, was keeping both her bosses happy - for what delighted one appeared to cause great angst for the other.
